So cue me in the Fox’s tent in Birmingham Pride waiting like everyone else was for the gorgeous Laura Catlow. When she emerged onto the stage, showing her patriotism wearing a union jack Tshirt even though she must have been freezing ( I was shivering so much I could barely write, and accidently told someone I was vibrating) a lot more girls piled into the tent to see her perform.
She didn’t look nervous at all which was refreshing as a few of the others performing across the weekend could barely speak into the microphone. When she started singing the first song of her set ‘Looking rough,’ the amount of people mouthing the words was really nice to see, especially her mum who was cheering her on in the front row.
Her covers included a really different version of ‘Don’t trust me,’ by 303 in which she asked the audience to join in with shouty lines in the middle, ‘shush girl, shut your lips, do the Helen Keller, and talk with your hips.’ A lot of the tent shouted out, even the bar staff at the back making the atmosphere brilliant.
The most surprising cover was a medley of Johnny Cash songs where a couple behind me started dancing madly too and singing along. Catlow even almost sings like her idol doing the facial expressions and moved around the stage really getting into it which I thought made a really great performance even better.
Her song ‘if there’s anything more depressing than working in telesales I don’t want to know about it,’ has to be my favourite because I think everyone can relate to being in a job that they hate. The lyrics are charming and heart-warming and she really shows off her skills on the guitar.
She sang ‘You might not know my friend,’ beautifully and before her last song she wished her audience a nice day and told them all to come to Lfest. She’s a talented, funny singer who gives her all into a performance and even though she’s amazing, she still looks surprised and grateful by the support she gets at the end.
