Fight against Bullying.

Homophobic bullying is still such a massive thing in our society and whether people don’t see it, or choose not to see it,  more teens then you think are falling into depression, or taking their own lives.

If you haven’t heard of the L project, then firstly, why the hell haven’t you heard of them? Secondly, it’s a more awesome-than-cupcakes campaign to raise awareness and help stop LGBT bullying, and thirdly, in February they brought out an amazing single that has every hot gay singer you could ever need in the video.

Buying the song ‘It does get better,’ is a huge help, as well as sharing it on your Facebook wall and telling people all about it like your friends, your mum and your cat.

Georgey Payne, Lead vocalist in Greymatter wrote the song and she and Sofia Antonia Milone enlisted the help of singers from the music world. From the powerful vocals from Horse and Amber of Heads Hearts, to the softer stylized sounds of Neon Choir’s Amy and the sexy piano playing of Belinda O’Hooley. Not only will the video make you want to be part of something, but will really make you wish you’d learnt to sing or practised an instrument. The closest I get to being a musician is when I flush the loo.

In Lfest, while watching Jill Jackson and drinking in the sun, I caught up with the two project Co-ordinators to talk about their work so far, their plans for the future and the teddy bears.

How did it all start up?

G –  I don’t know! No I’m joking. Sofia will put it in words better than I can.

S – With me personally Georgie approached me with this song she had written and asked would I want to be involved. And I really wanted to give something back. There’s been so much in the media about teen suicides, people being bullied and it was appalling.

How did you build your audience?

S – We’re on that train now, all these people who have been supporting us and we hope to get a lot more on board. We hope that the people are benefitting from what we’re doing. The amount of feedback has really helped us and spurred us on.

How did you choose the seventeen performing for you?

S – Georgie picked them all, they’re all performing artists from various music scenes. This will be a rare time where we’re all together apart from two.

Yeah I’ve only seen the same six perform!

S - It’s just who’s available at the time, with work commitments and stuff.

G – I picked the acts because I always listen carefully to other acts and see if I like them. All of these artists I’ve worked with on the music circuit, meaning we’ve been at gigs together either a festival or pride etc. I remember that I love all of their voices and knew they could sing well which is what was needed in order to record the whole in the 2 days we had in the studio. Plus they are all lovely people and no one is a diva!

How else are you raising money?

S – We have lots of merchandise, we’ve got tshirts that say I heart TLP and the slogan ‘If we can truly understand the reasons behind closed minds we can learn how to open them.’

That’s such a lovely quote.

G – We have teddy bears too!

Oh yeah the rainbow ones! Everyone loves teddies.

S – And a few companies like Foxt are donating some of their profits to our chosen charities too.

What do you see for the future of Lproject?

S – We want to do a lot more projects. We have loads of ideas. At the moment we’re focusing on raising funds for the future. We want to build on the press coverage, we’ve been on a few radio stations but it would be amazing to get some main stream coverage. Or if we had a big celebrity to endorse us. We’ve had a few retweets which is always exciting!

G – We just want so many more people to support our cause.

So gang what’s not to love? Help Sofia and Georgey with their campiagn and contribute to stamping out gay bullying. I have a tshirt and anyone who reads this will know how fussy I am with clothes and yet this one does look pretty damn good. Or buy a teddy and have it propped up oin your bed like a lesbian mascot. If you feel like doing a good deed for the day then have a little look at the video and do your having-a-gay-day duty.

  1. I loved sofia at the fire pit. and their performance was just sick. Want them to perform in more pridess so we can see them live again!

  2. What a thing these girls are doing. We lost our cousin last year as an affect of homophbia in the school. She was only 14. This is the best campaign I know and I urge everyone to go on it and donate something little or your time. thanks effi mai for doing a piece on this. I hope it reaises more awareness.
